Proving cricket pundits and critics wrong, the Sri Lankan cricket team defeated Pakistan by 23 runs in a high-profile final in Dubai and lifted their sixth Asia Cup trophy.
In a fairytale finish for Sri Lankan cricket team - which suffered a shambolic defeat in its tournament opener - made a terrific comeback in the second phase of the tournament and went on to win four games on the bounce.
Having posted a respectable 170/6 in the stipulated 20 overs, also broke the jinx by defending the total in a big contest.
Recovering his team from 58 for 5, Bhanuka Rajapakse and Wanindu Hasaranga first bailed the team out from a tricky situation with their partnership of58 off 36 balls. Rajapakse's valiant knock of 71* off 45 and Hasaranga's 36 helped the Lankan Lions post a respectable total and also take the momentum in their favour by the end of the first innings.
In the run chase, Pakistan felt the heat and their batters failed to absorb the pressure of a big game. With captain Babar Azam's early departure, Pakistani side failed to revive and Mohammad Rizwan - despite scoring a gritty fifty and holding the guard from one side - failed to help his team cross the line.
Hasaranga - who bagged three wickets in his third over - turned the tide in Sri Lanka's favour after youngster Pramod Madushan grabbed a four-for.
The win is going to be a major short in the arm for this Dasun Shanaka-led side as it has to play the ICC WC qualifiers and it might also help in the revival of Sri Lankan cricket.
