Commentary

Punjab Kings put up a stellar show in all three departments as they hammered Chennai Super Kings by 54 runs in the IPL 2022 league game.

Having posted a respectable 180/8 having being put in to bat first, Punjab bowlers rose to the occasion to bundle CSK out for 126. It was only the second occasion since 2018 when CSK were bowled out.

Super Kings' miseries in the ongoing tournament continued to pile up as they suffered their third successive defeat.

Chasing a respectable target of 181, the defending champions were off to a disastrous start as they lost the top four inside powerplay.

Punjab Kings pacers Kagiso Rabada, debutant Vaibhav Arora and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh struck in unison in the first six overs to rattle CSK's top-order in the big run chase.

Ruturaj Gaikwad's lean patch with the bat continued as the Orange Cap winner of the previous edition was dismissed for just one after getting caught at slip cordon by Shikhar Dhawan off Kagiso Rabada.

Robin Uthappa - who scored a brilliant half-century in the previous game - became the first victim of Vaibhav in the IPL as he was caught for 13(10) at mid-off by Mayank Agarwal in the third over.

CSK had high hopes from their all-rounders Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja were dismissed for a duck while chopping onto the stumps. While Ali became Aror's victim, Jadeja was dismissed by Arshdeep. The scorecard read 23/4 when the CSK skipper walked back towards the dugout.

The scorecard soon read 36/5 when Ambati Rayudu (13) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma. Rayudu was cramped by the short-pitched delivery from Odean Smith and couldn't remove his hands from the trajectory of the ball. Arora finished on his debut with impressive figures of 2/21 and captain Mayank used him well.

Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni stemmed the fall of wickets in the middle overs but the damage had already been done as the asking rate kept mounting and Punjab bowlers kept bowling disciplined lines. Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar and Livingstone bowled tight lines and kept Dhoni silent, who hardly takes any chances against spinners.

The former CSK captain scored 10 off 19 and that too didn't help the team's cause even as Shivam Dube kept scoring at a decent pace at the other end.

The left-handed batter notched up a fine fifty off 26 deliveries and hit two brilliant sixes off Kagiso Rabada. But his resistance came to an end for 57 off 30 as Livingstone broke the partnership of 62 runs between him and Dhoni.

Livingstone then took a superb return catch on the next delivery to send Dwayne Bravo home for a golden duck.

Dhoni's innings also came to an end for 23 off 28 after young Jitesh Sharma caught him behind and asked the captain to take the DRS and he was spot on. Rahul Chahar was the man who got the wicket of Dhoni and finished with figures of 3/25. Batting has been a major letdown for CSK in the tournament and they'd need to go back to the drawing board to pull up their socks.

Earlier in the day, Ravindra Jadeja proved third time lucky as he won his first toss and invited the opposition to bat first.

The strike bowlers Mukesh Choudhary and Chris Jordan gave the fielding side a tidy start as Punjab lost captain Mayank Agarwal (4) and Bhanuka Rajapakse (9) were dismissed in the first two overs.

Choudhary who dismissed Agarwal on the second delivery of the match was taken to the cleaners in his next over when England's swashbuckler Liam Livingstone smacked 26 runs from the left-arm pacer's next over.

Despite losing two quick wickets, Livingstone and Shikhar Dhawan gave Punjab a steady start in the powerplay as they reached 72/2.

Livingstone showed why he's rated so highly in this format as he slammed his maiden IPL fifty off 27 deliveries. The destructive right-handed batsman rode on his luck as he was dropped for 45 by Rayudu off Jadeja, and went on to add 15 more runs to his total. He eventually was caught by Rayudu at third man off Jadeja after scoring 60 off 32 balls. His knock was studded with five maximums, the longest being 108-meter long.

Dhawan - who played a second fiddle to dangerous-looking Livingstone - was dismissed by Dwayne Bravo.

Despite posting a healthy 109 for three in the first 10 overs, Punjab's middle-order failed to capitalise upon the start and could only score 79 in the next ten overs. However, debutant Jitesh Sharma played a brilliant cameo of 26 off 17 deliveries, including three maximums. But no other batter could fire in the slog overs as CSK bowlers pulled things back in the end and prevented their opponents from posting a huge total.

Chris Jordan - who made his debut for CSK - was the pick of the bowler for the side and returned with 2/23. South Africa pacer Dwaine Pretorius had another fine outing with the ball as he finished his quota of four overs with 2/30.
