Asian Wrestling Championships: Nitesh Clinches Greco Roman Silver in the 97kg; Sachin, Prince Bag Bronze

Bishkek, April 8: Indian wrestlers collected three Greco Roman medals and lined up three more chances in women’s events at the 2026 Senior Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek on Wednesday (April 8), as Nitesh claimed silver in the 97kg class and Sachin Sahrawat and Prince secured bronze medals.

These results took India’s overall tally on day three of the Asian meet to two silver and three bronze medals, while women’s wrestlers Hansika Lamba, Neha and Neelam stayed in contention for bronze, keeping the Indian contingent active across several weight categories.

Nitesh, 23, improved on the previous edition by reaching the 97kg Greco Roman final, where the Indian wrestler faced defending champion Mohammadhadi Saravi and lost 1-7 in the title bout, after earlier wins had carried Nitesh through the upper half of the draw.

Sachin Sahrawat opened India’s account on 8 April, claiming bronze in the 67kg Greco Roman event after edging Abdumalik Aminov of Uzbekistan 6-5, overturning a 3-5 deficit in the second period and sealing the medal with a late takedown and a point from a lost Uzbek challenge.

Sachin had earlier defeated China’s Ji Leng in the Repechage round to enter the bronze medal contest, while Prince added India’s second Greco Roman bronze of the day by overpowering Didar Amannazarov of Turkmenistan 10-1 in the 82kg category with a controlled, one-sided display.

In women’s wrestling, Hansika Lamba in 55kg and Neha in 59kg both moved into bronze medal play-offs after semi-final defeats, as Hansika lost 11-1 to last edition’s silver medallist Yuxuan Li of China and prepared to meet Aruuke Kadyrbek Kyzy next in the bronze medal bout.

Neha then faced former Asian champion Mengyu Xie of China and battled hard before going down 12-5, setting up a bronze match against Mongolia’s Bolortuya Khurelkhuu, while Neelam advanced to the 50kg Repechage after Japan’s Yui Sasaki, who had beaten Neelam in the quarterfinals, reached the final.

Neelam was scheduled to wrestle China’s Ziqi Feng in the 50kg Repechage round on Thursday, leaving India with multiple medal opportunities still open as competition in Bishkek entered later stages, following a day that already delivered one silver and two bronze medals in Greco Roman events.
