Venus Williams and Golovin move on in Charleston

CHARLESTON, South Carolina, Apr 10 (Reuters) Venus Williams remained on course for a last-16 meeting with sister Serena when she beat Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-2 in the Family Circle Cup today.

The unseeded Williams, who reached 120 mph with her serve in the first round match on the green clay, was playing her first singles match against Australian doubles specialist Stosur, seeded 14th.

''I don't think of myself as an underdog,'' said former world number one Williams, now ranked 29.

''I just think of myself as not being as ready as I should be, and that happens when you take time off Tour.'' Third-seeded Australian Open champion Serena Williams, who had a first round bye, was scheduled to play Chan Yung-Jan of Taiwan in a second round match later today.

World number 19 Tatiana Golovin, who upset Nadia Petrova last week in the Amelia Island final, survived a toe blister on the way to a 6-4 6-1 win over Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

''My whole body is kind of giving up on me slowly, little by little,'' said the 10th-seeded 19-year-old Frenchwoman.

''But my trainer is here and he'll take good care of me and I'll be ready to go (on).'' Francesca Schiavone won her match when Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual retired with a back injury with the 11th seed from Italy 6-2 2-0 ahead.
