Sania storms into 2nd Rd of Wimbledon; Avenges defeat vs Shvedova
London, June 27 (UNI) Sania Mirza enjoyed a revengeful start to her Wimbledon campaign as she defeated Russian Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 to reach the second round of women's singles here.
Such was her authoratative display that she wrapped up the match in less than an hour against the 80th ranked rival, who had beaten the Hyderabadi girl at the qurater-finals of the Bangalore Open in February this year.
Although Sania had more double faults and Unforced errors against her name, she pulled it back by winning a higher percentage of the first and second serves.
She won 50 per cent of the breakpoints, converting four out of the eight breakpoints while Shvedova none of the three opportunities that came her way.
However, the 20-year-old Sania will not have too much time to soak in the delight of her first round win as she next runs into another Russian, but a much more potent one in the 11th seeded Nadia Petrova.
Petrova, who is currently ranked ninth in the latest rankings updated by the WTA on Monday, made her intentions clear with a ruthless 6-0, 6-1 hammering to one of Sania's earlier doubles partner, Vania King of the US, in the first round.
