Sania storms in the second round of US Open
New York, Aug 29 (UNI) India's Sania Mirza made it to the second round of the US Open singles event by beating Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
The Hyderabadi girl, ranked World 27th, was given a hard time by 44th ranked Estonian for one hour and 40 minutes while the crowd was cheering Sania, who is having a good summer hardcourt season.
The Indian, seeded 26th, lost one break lead in the second set and was pushed to a third but was in total control once there, moving past the big-hitter opponent to make it to the second round.
Sania, who made it to the second round of US Open last year and fourth in 2005, will now face America's Laura Granville in the second round who defeated Olivia Sanchez of France 6-2, 6-2.
