Rain forces postponment of ITF Futures singles final

Chennai, July 28 (UNI) The overnight heavy rain which drenched the clay courts at the Gandhinagar club forced the postponment of the ITF Futures singles final being held here tomorrow.

In an all Indian final, Davis Cupper and the second seeded Vijay Kannan was to take on his Tamil Nadu colleague, the unseeded Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in the title clash this afternoon. Despite hard efforts, the groundstaff could not get the courts fit for play for the match which was scheduled to start at 1430 hrs.

The organising committee is in a dilemma as although the match has been rescheduled to be played at 1000 hrs tomorrow, they are confronted with the possibility of rain occurring again.

If rain intervenes again, the organisers are contemplating to shift the match to the international class Sports Developemnt Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDATN) Nungambakkam stadium which has been hosting the ATP tour event, Chennai Open in January every year.

However, the surface there is hard court and the matches have been currently held in clay court in the ongoing Futures tournament here so far.

The Chennai leg of the Futures tournament will be followed by two more in New Delhi and Chandigarh, according to the organising committee.
