Paes crashes out in doubles; advances in mixed doubles
London, July 6 (UNI) Fifth seeds Leander Paes of India and Martin Damm of Czech Republic bowed out of Wimbledon after going down 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 3-6 to Fabrice Santoro of France and Nenad Zimonic of Serbia in a marathon men's doubles quarter-final match here today.
After losing the opening set in tiebreaker, the Indo-Czech pair pulled back one but then ran out of steam and lost the four-setter in little-under three hours.
Santoro and Zimonjic cashed in on the opportunties that came there way converting four out of seven breakpoints while Paes and Damm floundered winning only two out of four.
Earlier, Paes had better luck in the mixed doubles where he, partnering Meghann Shaughnessy of USA, demolished Jaroslav Levinsky and Renata Voracova of Czech Replubic 6-0, 6-0 to sail into pre-quaterfinals of the prestigious Grand Slam event here.
The Indo-US duo will now meet 12th seeded Todd Perry of Australia and Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei for a place in last eight.
Eighth seeded Paes and Shaughnessy took just 35 minutes to demolish their unseeded opponents.
After Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi's exit from Wimbledon, Paes remains the only Indian in the fray.
