Delhi sweeps tennis singles
Guwahati, Feb 17 (UNI) Hot favourite Delhi swept the singles' event of the 33rd National Games on the penultimate day of the 10-day sporting extravaganza winning the golden double for Delhi in both men's and women's singles.
In the women's singles final, Parul Goswami of Delhi clinched the yellow medal, beating Sonal Phadke of Maharashtra 7-6, 6-3, while in the men's category, Divij Saran, the hero of the men's team event, drubbed Manoj Sewa of West Bengal in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
In the first final of the day, Parul was stretched by Phadke in the first set but the Maharashtrian ran out of steam to lose the second set pretty easily.
The first set went all the way to the tie-breaker with both Parul and Sonal locked at 4-4 but Parul was back on song with three quick points to swing the match in her favour.
In the men's singles, top AITA ranked Divij Saran of Delhi grabbed the top position at the podium, winning in straight sets against Manoj Sewa of West Bengal.
In the match that lasted 90 minutes, Manoj caved in meekly to Divij, who played a terrific match and dominated right from the start in a one-sided contest.
