Aegon Classic: Sharapova wins opener

Birmingham, Jun 9: Maria Sharapova made a winning start in Aegon classic defeating Stephanie Dubois 6-4, 6-2 on Monday, Jun 8.

The former top ranked Russian beat the Canadian to move on in the grass-court season. Sharapova will now face Alexa Glatch of the United States.

Alexa Glatch defeated fellow American, Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-6, 6-3.

The tournament is seen as a warm up for Wimbledon. This tourney effectively launched Sharapova's career when she won it in 2004 and went on to emerge victorious in 2005 and a runner-up in 2007.
