Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad found himself at the center of a lighthearted controversy after a playful remark about Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stirred fans during an event in Bengaluru.

As the event began, Gaikwad was handed a microphone that, unfortunately, failed to work. The presenter addressed the technical issue, prompting Gaikwad to quip, "Must be an RCB fan."

His comment drew a mix of cheers and boos from the audience, showcasing the heated rivalry between CSK and RCB supporters.

While CSK fans appreciated Gaikwad's wit, RCB fans were less amused, with many taking to social media to voice their displeasure. The rivalry between the two franchises, often referred to as the Kaveri or Southern Derby, has been one of the most intense in IPL history, producing nail-biting encounters over the years.

Gaikwad further continued and irked the RCB supporters recalling his first match as CSK captain, in which the Chennai team won against RCB.

"I think, one memorable moment was - I guess not many people will like - my first match as IPL captain was against RCB and we won it. And another one was to captain MS Dhoni. So I am grateful for that," he continued.

Fans divided on Social Media as CSK vs RCB ignites

The cheeky comment has sparked a fresh wave of banter on social media, with some hailing Gaikwad's humour and others calling it unnecessary. Regardless, it's another chapter in the ever-entertaining saga of their rivalry that extends far beyond the cricket field.

'RCB gonna come hard,' a fan said, while another one said that 'RCB gonna come hard'.

With IPL fans known for their passionate support, Gaikwad's dig at RCB is sure to keep the conversation going until the two teams meet again in the upcoming season in IPL 2025. Gaikwad will be spearheading CSK as they look for their 6th IPL title next season.

RCB, on the other hand, is yet to name their captain ahead of the new season. Virat Kohli has been tipped to lead the franchise in the upcoming season as they take field ahead of the new cycle.
