Petkar, a trailblazer in Indian sports, will be honoured with the Arjuna Award (Lifetime Achievement) for his unparalleled contributions. His journey from surviving nine bullet wounds during the 1965 war with Pakistan to becoming India’s first Paralympic gold medallist in 1972 is nothing short of extraordinary.

Khan recalled being shocked when he first learned about Petkar’s story, describing it as “criminal” that a hero of this calibre remained unnoticed for so long.

Murlikant Petkar’s journey is one of resilience and determination. Despite the physical and emotional toll of war injuries, he refused to give up. Petkar turned to swimming and became a Paralympic legend by clinching a gold medal in the 50m freestyle event at the 1972 Games, setting a world record in the process.
The film Chandu Champion not only amplified Petkar’s story but also ignited renewed interest in his achievements. “People are talking about him, journalists are writing about him, and he’s being invited to speak. This recognition is the true success of the film,” said Kabir Khan.
