Vintage Atwal produces best show to finish tied 29th
Cromwell, Connecticut, June 25 (UNI) Arjun Atwal played his best golf in what now seems like ages as the Indian carded a near-perfect six-under 64 to finish with tied 29th at the Travelers Championship here.
Overnight tied 55th, Atwal reserved his best for the last and fired in seven birdies as against a solitary bogey on a bright sunny day to register the least score of the last round.
The Georgia-based pro aggregated three-under 277 in his four rounds, 12 strokes off the winner, Hunter Mahan of United States, who shot a brilliant five-under 65 to force a playoff where he pipped compatriot and overnight leader Jay Williamson to lift the crown. Former World No 1 Vijay Singh carded a six-birdie 65 yesterday to grab sole fourth position.
Atwal, who has't had best of the time on and off the greens was out to prove a point. And he was off to fantastic start as he hit two birdies on the first two holes. The bogey on the par-four third hole was the only blemish as he picked another shot on the 6th before turning at two-under.
However, it was on the back nine where Atwal came to his true colours. He reeled off four birdies in space of six holes to end his campaign on a high.
