US Basketball coach in Kashmir to train children
Srinagar, Jun 27 (UNI) An American basketball coach is nowadays here to coach a group of children from the Kashmir valley.
The two-day basketball clinic was organised by Child Nurture and Relief (CHINAR) in collaboration with J D Walsh Basketball School (JDWBBS) from yesterday.
The coach, J D Walsh, trained the children the basketball fundamentals such as dribbling, passing and shooting.
The event was a hit with the children who were delighted to have participated in it. On the second day of the clinic today, a group from other area schools joined CHINAR children.
The purpose of the basketball clinic was to utilise the powerful influence of sport as a means of psychosocial rehabilitation and community integration of children impacted by conflict.
The clinic was part of a three-year programme ''Hoops for Health'' that will consist of recruitment, training and hiring of a permanent coach, building an onsite basketball court and arranging games for the CHINAR youth.
CHINAR has been working for psychosocial rehabilitation of orphaned children from the conflict-ridden areas of the Kashmir Valley for the past three years now.
Founded in 1998, JDWBBS is a global roving basketball school that works in conjunction with foreign governments, NGOs and non-profits organisations to educate youth through sports. The school has operated in China, Israel, Italy, and the Dominican Republic.
