UP Olympic Association foresees better 'sporting' days ahead
Lucknow, June 14 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Olympic Association (UPOA) today welcomed the move of repealing of the controversial UP Sports Act 2005 by the newly-elected Mayawati government.
The Sports Act had made for mandatory registration of all the sports bodies in the state.
UP legislative assembly member and UPOA senior vice president Ranjit Singh Judeo alleged thatr the Act introduced by the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government had impeded the path of sports bodies and players alike.
''The repealing of the UP Sports Act 2005 will give impetus to development of sports in the state and prove beneficial to the sportspersons,'' he hoped.
The decision to scrap the Sports Act was taken by the state cabinet here yesterday.
All the state sports bodies had vehemently opposed the Act and only 10 sports associations affiliated with the UPOA had registered under it.
The Act had also led to cancellation of the Ranji Trophy final tie between UP and Railways in Lucknow and a test match between India and Sri Lanka in Kanpur.
