Union Budget 2024: Sports Sector Welcomes Youth Development and Upskilling as Khelo India Takes Center Stage

New Delhi, Jul 23: The BJP-led NDA Government on Tuesday (July 23) presented its eleventh Union Budget. Presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Modi 3.0 Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming India into an elite sporting nation.

This year, the sports sector received its highest-ever allocation of INR 3,442 crores, up from INR 3,396 crores the previous year.

Union Budget 2024 Sports Sector Welcomes Youth Development and Upskilling as Khelo India Takes Center Stage

A significant focus of the Union Budget is youth development, with the government set to invest heavily in grassroots initiatives and upskilling to elevate the Indian sporting fraternity. The Khelo India program, a flagship initiative, received the largest share of the sports budget, amounting to INR 900 crores.

The impact of Khelo India is evident as India's contingent for the Paris Olympics 2024 showcases the growing talent pool. More than 60% of the Indian athletes heading to Paris will be making their Olympic debuts, highlighting the program's effectiveness in nurturing young talent.

Suhail Chandhok, CEO of U Mumba, commented, "From the Paris contingent of 117 Indian players, an impressive 61% are making their debut for India. This highlights how India is emerging as a powerhouse in sports with the right opportunities and support.

The continued investment in the Khelo India Youth Games through the Union Budget underscores a clear commitment, making sports an attractive avenue for countless young talents to shape their futures.

"In chess, for instance, our teenage athletes are not only competing but also triumphing over global champions, setting a precedent that resonates across other sports as well. Moreover, the emphasis on youth skill development and support for institutions like the National Sports University and the National Anti-Doping Agency demonstrates a steadfast dedication to nurturing excellence across all aspects of sports."

The consistent investment in sports has contributed to the holistic development of Indian athletes, enabling them to compete at elite levels and strive toward matching their peers from established sporting nations.

Punit Balan, Chairman & Managing Director of the Punit Balan Group, stated, "Additional resources allocated to advanced coaching techniques and equipment, alongside increased funding, will greatly enhance training facilities, and support systems, and elevate success rates in international competitions.

"As we work towards hosting the Olympics in 2036, this forward-thinking strategy not only paves the way for future sporting excellence but also emphasizes our steadfast commitment. At Punit Balan Group, we are deeply invested in sports and dedicated to supporting Indian athletes. Well-funded sports programs not only enhance success on the global stage but also foster national pride."

Significant boosts were also given to autonomous bodies like the Sports Authority of India, the National Sports University, the National Anti-Doping Agency, and the National Dope Testing Laboratory to maintain excellence from grassroots to senior levels.

Sreekar Channapragada, Co-Founder of the chess startup MGD1, remarked, "We welcome another robust commitment from the Government of India to the sports sector. The significant increase in funding allocation over the past decade has elevated India from the periphery of international competition to a contender among global powerhouses, across sports such as chess and more.

"The removal of angel tax, which will provide a boost to startups, further accelerates this positive trajectory. With a sustained emphasis on holistic development, we are optimistic that India is poised to emerge as a leading sporting nation in the near future."

The increased allocation of funds to sports will empower various stakeholders to uphold high standards, foster a robust community, and equip athletes with the necessary tools for success.

Rajesh Menon, Vice President and Head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, said, "Increasing investments in youth development through robust upskilling initiatives, continued strategic funding for Khelo India programs, and a strong focus on enhancing anti-doping protocols represent a pivotal step forward in advancing the sports movement in India.

"These measures are crucial not only to empower aspiring athletes but also to nurture community-based sports initiatives, fostering meaningful partnerships that uphold the highest standards of fairness and create a grassroots excellence sporting system for Indian sports."

Dr Aruna Sharma, Policy Advisor, Practitioner Development Economist, and Former Secretary to GoI, noted, "The Economic Survey released on 22nd July highlights the urgent need for the right skilling, revealing that 50% of the youth are not employable due to inadequate skills. As an outcome, like this year, skilling has been a focus area for the government in the past many years.

"However, despite a decade of investment in skilling, the allocated budgets have not delivered the desired results. Attaching a couple of apprentices to MSMEs might prove to be essential. Furthermore, online gaming could be an effective tool for skill development through engaging methods. We need trained individuals who are focused, dedicated, and hardworking."

As India prepares for its most pivotal Olympic campaign yet in Paris, the government's renewed commitment signals a future of sustained glory, with regular achievements on the Olympic stage in sight.
