Sunderland beat Spurs, debut win for Eriksson

LONDON, Aug 11 (Reuters) Roy Keane's promoted Sunderland beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 and Sven-Goran Eriksson's Manchester City defeated West Ham United 2-0 as the Premier League season got underway today.

Sam Allardyce's first league game in charge of Newcastle United ended with a 3-1 win at former club Bolton Wanderers, while promoted Derby County earned a 2-2 draw with Portsmouth.

There was no joy, though, for Wigan Athletic's new coach Chris Hutchings, whose side lost a northwest derby at Everton 2-1. Blackburn Rovers came from behind to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 at the Riverside.

Premier League action was continuing later on Saturday, with Liverpool at Aston Villa, while champions Manchester United, FA Cup holders Chelsea and Arsenal all play on Sunday.
