Sri Lanka to sign an anti doping agreement with UNESCO

Colombo, Feb 3 (PTI) Sri Lanka has decided to sign ananti-doping agreement with the UNESCO, government''sinformation department said today.

Cabinet of ministers granted approval to sign theagreement in order to eliminate doping in sports.

"Since sports play and important role in the protectionof health and physical education, the need to encourage andcoordinate international cooperation towards the eliminationof doping in sports has been greatly felt," governmentinformation department said in a statement.

Sports law in the country will also be amended, wherevernecessary, to eliminate doping.

Sri Lankan boxer Manju Wanniarachchi, who won the onlygold medal at Commonwealth Games in New Delhi last year for tecountry, lost the medal after failing the doping test.

His hearing, which was scheduled for last month inJamaica, has been postponed to May on the request of his legalteam.
