Sridhar in quarter-finals of German Open GP
Mulheim an der Ruhr, Mar 2 (UNI) Anup Sridhar's spree of upset victories continued in the German Open Grand Prix badminton tournament, as he beat Kaspar Oedum of Denmark 21-18, 21-19 to advance into the quarter-finals here.
The world number 49 Indian accounted for the Danish opponent, ranked 17 places above him, in 35 minutes and will now meet world number 23 Sung Hwan Park of Korea in the round of eight.
Sridhar, who had beaten world number 20 Bjoern Joppien of Germany 21-19, 21-11 in the earlier round, now remains the only Indian left in the singles competition after Anand Pawar lost to Yi Lu of China 18-21, 21-13, 21-10.
Women's double pair of Shruti Kurian and Jwala Gutta were also beaten 15-21, 6-21 by Nicole Grether and Juliane Schenk of Germany in the second round.
In the men's doubles, however, Rupesh Kumar and Thomas Sanave upset seventh seeds Zhendong Guo and He Hanbin of China with a 16-21, 21-19, 21-18 victory in a 51-minute contest to sail into the quater-finals.
They now run into top seeds Jae Sung Jung and Yong Dae Lee of Korea in the round of eight match.
