Sporting shocked by Peerless
Kolkata, July 31 (UNI) Peerless SC recorded the first upset of Calcutta Premier League defeating Mohammedan Sporting by a solitary goal here today.
Gouranga Biswas scored the winner in the 62nd minute. Zoaif Hasan set up the opportunity with a floater from right and Biswas outjumped his markers to head home.
However, Sporting goalkeeper Nasibul Haq was late to react, thus presented the scorer with a clear sight of the target. Biswas was adjudged man-of-the-match.
Peerless had the better of exchanges on the day and created a few chances.
They outpaced their more fancied rivals, especially in the second half.
Sporting, however, had their moments. In the 71st minute, Basudeb Mondal sent a ball to Prashanta Chakraborty who passed it towards K Kulothungan.
The latter slipped while taking a crack at goal but the ball fortunately went to substitute Nirapada Mondal.
On a soggy pitch, the match never rose above mediocrity. The first half was dull. Veteran midfielder Basudeb Mondal tried to take some initiative in the second half though.
