Golf legend Seve Ballesteros no more

Madrid, May 7: Seve Ballesteros, the Golf legend had died early morning on May 7, said a statement on his website. He was 54, and was living at his residence in the Northern Spanish town of Pedrena.

The family in a statement said, "is very grateful for all the support and gestures of love that have been received since Seve was diagnosed with a brain tumour on 5th October 2008."

His family on May 6, had announced that he had suffered "severe deterioration" during his recovery from a cancerous brain tumour. A big star in Spain, Ballesteros was a winner of five major titles and according to compatriot and tennis superstar Rafael Nadal he was "one of the greats of this country without a doubt, a reference point for all Spanish athletes."

Ballesteros' health continued to decline and was visibly evident that he was becoming thin and pale after being given, "mulligan of my life." Ever since the fell off a golf cart and hit his head in March 2010, he was rarely seen in the public.

One of his major achievements was to successful lobby for the expansion of Ryder Cup to include continental Europe in 1979. He retired in 2007 because of a chronic back pain.

Ballesteros who played a major part to beat the US in the 1985 Ryder Cup and thus marked two decades of dominance, in his post-retirement life turned focus on golf course designing.
