Seventh seed Petrova upset by Szavay in third round

NEW YORK, Sept 1 (Reuters) Seventh seed Nadia Petrova became the highest seeded woman to fall at the US Open when she was upset 6-4 6-4 by Hungarian teenager Agnes Szavay in the third round today.

Russian Petrova had treatment for a left hip injury late in the first set but she was outplayed by the 18-year-old Szavay, who reached the fourth round of a grand slam event for the first time.

Szavay had to pull out of the final of the WTA event in New Haven last weekend with a back problem but looked fully fit again as she took the opening set.

The Hungarian then broke Petrova in the ninth game of the second set and saved four break points as she served out for a fourth-round clash with either Julia Vakulenko of Ukraine or Russian Maria Kirilenko.
