Separate Sports Dept to be set up in UT: Rangasamy

Puducherry, Mar 10 (UNI) The Puducherry administration will soon set up a separate Sports Department in the Union Territory, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said today.

Inaugurating the 29th national men and 7th national women team chess championships here, Mr Rangasamy said it was heartening to note that several sportspersons from Puducherry had recently won medals in the national level competitions and brought laurels to the Union Territory.

The territorial administration was providing all facilities to encourage sportspersons, he said.

Calling up on the parents to change their attitude of pressuring their wards to always study, Mr Rangasamy said they should be allowed to play for a particular time which would keep them physically fit as well as mentally strong. This would help the students to concentrate better in their studies, he added.

Puducherry Speaker R Radhakrishnan presided over the function.

As many as 200 players from 10 states are participating in the championships.
