Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage of Sri Lanka dominated the meet with a 92.62m throw. The winning effort came in Pathirage’s second attempt. It became Pathirage’s first Diamond League title. The distance was a maiden 90m-plus throw for Pathirage. It also ranked as the second-longest throw by an Asian.

Diamond League javelin results highlight Pathirage’s 90m mark

Pathirage’s 92.62m fell just short of Arshad Nadeem’s 92.97m from the Paris Olympics gold win. The throw moved ahead of Chao-Tsun Cheng’s 91.36m and Neeraj Chopra’s 90.23m. Pathirage became the fourth Asian and 28th overall to cross 90m.

Pathirage entered Thursday’s contest as the world season leader. Pathirage had thrown 89.37m in a domestic meet in March. Recent results also showed steady progress. Pathirage finished second in Rabat on May 31 with 85.97m. Pathirage also won the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi with 89.28m.

Diamond League debut proves difficult for Sachin Yadav

Sachin Yadav began with a foul throw in the competition. Sachin Yadav then registered 79.18m, 77.02m, 76.62m and 75.54. That sequence left Sachin Yadav eighth after five rounds. Only the top three after the fifth round earned a sixth and final attempt.

The 26-year-old had set a personal best of 86.27m at the Tokyo World Championships last year. Sachin Yadav finished fourth in that event. Sachin Yadav’s season best stood at 81.95m. That came while finishing second at the Indian Athletics Series 3 in April in New Delhi.

Diamond League field sees Peters, Thompson and Walcott on podium chase

Anderson Peters of Grenada finished second behind Pathirage with 83.91m in the fifth round. Curtis Thompson of the United States placed third with 83.89m. Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago took fourth with 83.45m in the fourth round. The field included several major medal winners.

For Sachin Yadav, the Rome Diamond League was the first international outing since the 2025 World Championships. Neeraj Chopra did not compete in Rome. Neeraj Chopra is training in Bienne, Switzerland, after a stint in Turkiye. Neeraj Chopra’s season opener has not been confirmed.

The next Diamond League meeting with men’s javelin on the roster is in Doha, Qatar, on June 19. The event was earlier set for May 8. Organisers rescheduled it to June 19. The change was linked to the military conflict in the Middle East region.
