Rory McIlroy's Pedestrian Start At Houston Open As He Prepares For The Masters

Rory McIlroy began the Houston Open with a steady performance, trailing the leaders by five strokes. This event marks his final PGA Tour appearance before The Masters, where he aims to secure his fifth major title. McIlroy's quest for victory at Augusta National, the only major he has yet to win, will take place from 10-13 April. Playing in Houston for the first time since 2014, McIlroy completed his opening round with an even-par 70.

The Northern Irishman faced challenging weather conditions, mixing two birdies with two bogeys and frequently needing to save par. "A little pedestrian, I guess, is a good way to describe it," McIlroy told Sky Sports. He noted the rainy and windy conditions made play difficult early on. Despite making crucial par saves initially, he missed several opportunities on the back nine.

McIlroy's Start at Houston Open Before Masters

World number one Scottie Scheffler had a more successful day, posting a three-under 67. He aims for a third Masters victory in four years next month. Scheffler could become the first player since Tiger Woods to win consecutive editions of The Masters in 2001 and 2002. Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler said, "I felt like I started to play a little bit better on the back nine."

Play was halted due to darkness at 7:28 p.m., leaving Taylor Dickson among those unable to complete their rounds. Dickson is just two shots behind the leaders with three holes remaining. Meanwhile, Alejandro Tosti, Ryan Gerard, Keith Mitchell, and Taylor Pendrith share the lead after strong performances.

Scheffler expressed satisfaction with his clean scorecard despite tough conditions. "On the first nine, I was getting it around a little bit but I still posted a score today," he said. Both rain and wind added difficulty to the course throughout the day.

McIlroy reflected on his mixed performance during both halves of his round. He felt he scrambled through the front nine but missed chances on the back nine. As he prepares for The Masters next month, McIlroy hopes to refine his game further.

The tournament's first round will continue tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m., followed by the second round starting as planned at 7:20 a.m., according to organisers' announcements on social media platforms.

As players continue their preparations for upcoming major tournaments like The Masters, they aim to fine-tune their skills and strategies in these competitive settings.
