Ramnaresh Sarwan appointed as West Indies captain

Bridgetown, Barbados, Apr 30 (UNI) West Indies' most dependable middle order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has been appointed the captain of the Caribbean side, suceeding Brian Lara who bid adieu to international cricket after a dismal World Cup outing.

The Caribbean Media Corp (CMC) reported that Sarwan was unanimously chosen for the top post over Trinidad and Tobago captain Daren Ganga during a special meeting of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) here yesterday.

The 26-year-old batsman's name was recommended for the post by the selection panel consisting of chairman Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts.

Sarwan, who was Lara's deputy during the just concluded World Cup, is reported to be in Miami and is expected to join the selectors in Antigua to pick the squad for upcoming England tour.

West Indies are slated to play four Tests, two Twenty20 internationals and three ODIs during the May 12 to July 7 tour.

In yesterday's meeting the WICB also discussed the issues of new coach appointment following Aussie Bennett King's resignation after the World Cup.
