Prasun Mukherjee panel sweeps CAB polls

Kolkata, July 28 (UNI) Incumbent Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Prasun Mukherjee made a clean sweep in the state cricket body polls today as his entire panel got elected.

Joint secretaries from Mukherjee's panel Samar Pal and Amitava Banerjee secured 80 and 57 votes respectively, while the opposition, consisting of Saradindu Pal and Biswaroop Dey, who were backed by the Jagmohan Dalmiya camp, got 40 and 50 votes respectively.

Mr Mukherjee's candidate for the post of Treasurer - Tushar Sarkar - also upstaged sitting official Shibkumar Kalyani.

While Sarkar scored 68, Kalyani managed 50 votes.

CAB elections were held today for the posts of the two Joint Secretraies and Treasurer, for which six candidates were in fray.

Earlier, city police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee got elected uncontested with Jagmohan Dalmiya deciding not to contest the polls this year despite a major shot in the arm following a Calcutta High Court judgement favouring him against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which had slapped corruption charges against him and banned him for life.

There was also no contest for the vice-president's posts as Russi Jeejeebhoy, Indranath Dey, Nemai Charan Dutta and Subhasish Sarkar, all Mukherjee's candidates, were elected as vice-presidents uncontested.

The CAB polls assumed significance after the court verdict favouring Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Pushed to the brink by the BCCI, Dalmiya got a major boost last week when the Calcutta High Court termed his suspension by the BCCI illegal and ruled that he could contest any cricket body poll from anywhere in India.
