Chennai, May 12 (UNI) The plan for the FIFA's tsunami football stadium at Port Blair has been approved by Andaman and Nicobar administration, All India Football Federation (AIFF) Vice President C R Visswanathan, who is coordinator of the project, announced here today.
Addressing a press conference here in connection with the India-Iraq Pre Olympic qualifier match to be played here on May 16, he said the stadium would be constructed at a cost of Rs 4.25 crore, fully funded by the international football association FIFA. It would have a capacity of 4000 seats. The Andaman-Nicobar administration would be leasing out the land for the stadium for a period of 30 years.
He said the process of finalising the tender to decide the builder would be completed in ten days time and added FIFA itself would have the final say about selecting the tenderer.
While the foundation stone for the stadium would be laid before June, the construction of the stadium would be completed in one year.
FIFA is providing the new stadium there through AIFF as the existing stadium in Andaman and Nicobar islands was washed away in the tsunami tidal terror which struck on December 26, 2004.
