Policeman killed, Italian matches postponed
ROME, Feb 2 (Reuters) A policeman was killed today during riots at the Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo, causing the Italian soccer federation to suspend the weekend's programme of matches.
A police source said an officer had been killed and media identified him as a 38-year-old who died after a rioter hurled an explosive at his face.
Media also reported that more than 100 people were injured outside the stadium in the city of Catania, but the precise number of people injured could not be immediately confirmed.
Television images showed hundreds of angry fans outside the stadium, where police in riot gear where trying to control the crowds. Many fans were seen trying to flee down city streets to safety.
Other media reports said another policeman was seriously injured in the riots and undergoing emergency treatment at a Catania hospital.
