Parminder, Riddhi, Zainab, Advait cause stunning upsets

Pune, May 28 (UNI) Parminder Kaur, Zainab Ali Sajjad, Riddhi Hegde and Advait Sadwilkar scored upset victories when they knocked out top seed Sherene Wikwsingha, seventh seeded Ravina Shetty, eighth seed Madhuri Pathere and fourth seed Rajat Solanki at Asian Under-14 series tennis tournament here today.

In the biggest upset of the day, US-born Parminder, whose father has shifted base to India to pursue her tennis knocked out Sri Lankan top seed Sherene Wijwsingha 6-1, 6-2 in a one-sided encounter in the girls category, Zainab Ali Sjjad upset seventh seeded Ravina Shetty 6-3, 6-1, while in the same event Riddhi Hegde of Mumbai recorded her big win accounting for eight seeded Madhuri Pathere 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in a three hour encounter.

In the boys event, on a day of tough first round matches, Advait Sadwilkar of Pune, who came back into the draw as a lucky loser created the biggest upset when he accounted for fourth seeded Rajat Solanki 7-5, 6-0. Another Pune player Rakshay Thakkar came near to causing another upset on the adjoining court as he suandered a 6-3, 3-0 lead against sixth seeded Ronit Bisht. Bisht manged to regain his calm and went on to win a marathon two-hour battle 4-6, 6-4,6-2 and make it to the second round.

The tournament was inaugurated by Pune Divisional Commissioner and keen tennis enthusasist Nitin Karir, The president of PYC Mr Shashi Vaidya and Joint Secreraty of MSLTA Anand Tulpule presided over the function.
