Paris Olympics: Surfing - All You Need To Know About the Water Sports
Surfing returns for its second Olympic appearance at Paris Olympics 2024, bringing the thrill of competition to the tropical waters of Tahiti. But with surfing still a relatively new addition to the Olympic Games, there might be some confusion about the format, location, and judging criteria.
Fear not, wave riders and landlubbers alike! This guide will equip you with everything you need to know about Olympic Surfing in Paris 2024.

Location
Forget the City of Lights – surfing at the Paris Olympics won't be held in France. Instead, the competition takes place in Tahiti, a French Polynesian island roughly 10,000 miles away. Specifically, surfers will battle it out at Teahupo'o, a world-renowned left-hand reef break nicknamed "End of the Road" for its challenging and potentially dangerous waves.
Who Qualifies for Olympic Surfing?
A total of 48 surfers (24 men and 24 women) will compete for gold in Paris. Qualification takes place over several years, with surfers vying for coveted spots representing their home countries. Here’s the hierarchical order in which surfers qualified for Paris 2024:
- 2023 WSL Championship Tour (CT): Top performers from the pro surfing circuit earn a spot. (10 men, 8 women)
- 2023 ISA World Surfing Games (WSG): Top finishers at the ISA World Championship secure a place. (4 men, 4 women)
- 2023 Pan American Games: Regional champions from the Americas qualify. (1 man, 1 woman)
- 2024 ISA World Surfing Games: Winners from this competition earn an additional spot for their nation. (5 men, 7 women)
Note: Winning nations at the 2024 ISA WSG get an extra slot. - 2022 ISA World Surfing Games: Top finishers from the previous year's ISA World Championship qualify. (1 man, 1 woman)
- Host Country Quota: Tahiti, as the host territory, gets a guaranteed spot for one male and one female surfer.
- Universality Quota: To ensure global representation, a slot is reserved for a man and woman from countries with limited surfing opportunities.
Understanding the Competition Format
The Paris 2024 surfing competition follows a familiar format similar to most professional surfing contests. Here's a breakdown of the rounds:
- Round 1: Eight heats (for both men and women) featuring three surfers each. Top finishers in each heat advance to Round 3. Losers go to Round 2.
- Round 2: Eight head-to-head matchups. Winners progress to Round 3, losers are eliminated.
- Round 3: Eight heats with two surfers per heat. Winners move to the Quarterfinals, losers are out.
- Quarterfinals: Four surfer matchups. Winners advance to the Semifinals, losers are eliminated.
- Semifinals: Two surfers compete in each heat. Winners advance to the Finals, losers compete for the Bronze Medal.
- Bronze Medal Match: Losers from the Semifinals battle it out for third place.
- Finals: The ultimate showdown for Gold and Silver medals.
Scoring Format: What the Judges Look for
Surfers are judged on a 0-10 point scale for their maneuvers, tricks, and overall performance on the wave. The two highest scoring waves are combined for a possible total of 20 points. Judges evaluate the following criteria:
- Variety, type, and difficulty of tricks: Complex maneuvers and innovative combinations score higher.
- Speed, power, and flow: Judges assess how fast, powerful, and smooth the surfer rides the wave.
However, Teahupo'o is known more for its powerful barrels than flashy aerial maneuvers. Here, judges will likely prioritize barrel riding depth, critical drops, wave size, and finesse when navigating the challenging conditions.
