NSG commandos leave for Windies today
New Delhi, Mar 5 (UNI) A 16-member team of highly-trained National Secuirty Guards (NSG) commandos today left for the West Indies to assist the Cricket World Cup organisers in providing security to the players, including the Indian squad.
The NSG commandos will be deployed at all the match venues during the showpiece event in the Caribbeans from March 11 to April 28.
''The NSG, considered as the best counter-terrorist unit in Asia, will help the security system there,'' sources said.
Organisers of the World Cup had sent a communication to the Indian government requesting it to help them in security matters during the matches, sources said.
Accordingly, the government had sent a two-member team to Port of Spain during February 24-March 1 to discuss the issue with the organisers.
The sources said the decision to send the NSG team was taken on the basis of the report of the two-member team.
There were reports that a similar anti-terrorist team had been invited from France.
