North and east zone inter-varsity handball begins

Patiala, Jan 14 (UNI) Forty men and women handball teams from the universities in the north and east zone are participating in the intervarsity handball championship which began at the Raja Bhalendra Singh Stadium at Punjabi University here today.

The vice chancellor of the University, Swaran Singh Boparai, presided over the opening ceremony.

In today's matches in the women's section, HP University, Shimla beat MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareily by 31-5 and VBS Purvanchal University, Jaunpur beat Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur by 25-4.

In the lone match in the men's section, Benaras Hindu University beat Lucknow University 30-17.
