Nineteen drivers field for second edition, prize money hiked
Chennai, Apr 17 (UNI) A field of 19 young but rooky drivers will be in the grid with entries coming predominantly from Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Bangalore and Chandigarh, for the second edition of the JK Tyre Junior Cup racing championships to be held here on Aril 21 and 22, May 5 and 6 and June 2 and 3.
Announcing this at a press conference here, event Coordinator Vicky Chandok said the championship this year will be conducted over six rounds, with two eight lap races in each round in the Formula Maruti category at the 2.1 km long MMSC track at Irungattukottai near here, which also hosts the JK Tyre national road racing meet for seniors.
However, last year's winner Saran Vikram, who also performed well in the senior category is making his debut following the scholarship being offered to the top three finishers of that event in the Junior Cup.
The event launched last year by JK Tyre and Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) drew an overwhelming response from youngsters aspiring to make it big in this sport.
To give a further fillip to the sport at the grassroot level, JK Tyre decided to increase the winner's prize to Rs 12,000 and Rs 8000 and Rs 6000 for the second and third placed drivers, respectively, Chandok announced.
'' We decided to hike the prize money so that the boys can get the feeling of earning a livelihood from the sport'', Chandok said.
