The inaugural National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 got underway in Bhubaneswar with a historic start, as athletes across disciplines took centre stage at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium on Tuesday (March 24).
With India building towards hosting the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028, the event marks a significant step in elevating indoor track and field in the country.

Day 1 has already delivered standout moments, headlined by Baranica Elangovan's national record-breaking 4.22m pole vault, while strong performances from Mohammed Afsal, Sarun Payasingh, and Krishik M added to the excitement.

Women's 60m Hurdles Final Result

Anjali C of Kerala clinched gold in the women's 60m hurdles at the National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026, clocking an impressive 8.32 seconds. Sabita Toppo of Odisha secured silver with 8.40 seconds, while S Srireshma of Tamil Nadu finished third in 8.59 seconds. Pooja (JSW) and Deepika S (JSW) placed fourth and fifth with timings of 9.05 and 9.16 seconds respectively. The winning time, however, remained short of the national indoor record of 8.04 seconds held by Jyothi Yarraji, which she set while winning gold at the Meeting de Nantes Métropole in France in January 2025.

Krishik M of Karnataka clinched gold in the men's 60m hurdles at the National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026, clocking an impressive 7.71 seconds, finishing not far off the national indoor record of 7.64 seconds jointly held by Madhvendra Shekhawat and Tejas Shirse. Rathish Rathish of Reliance secured the silver medal with a time of 7.84 seconds, while Muhammed Lazan of JSW took bronze in 8.00 seconds. Siddhanth Umana (ONGC) finished fourth with 8.06 seconds, followed by Vikash Kumar Pa of Madhya Pradesh at 8.48 seconds, and Sachin Kumar of All India Police, who clocked 8.59 seconds.

Asian Games medallist Mohammed Afsal clinched gold in the men's 800m at the National Indoor Championships in Bhubaneswar, clocking 1:47.86.
In doing so, he broke the previous national indoor record of 1:48.09 set by Pradeep Senthilkumar earlier this year.
Afsal also holds the outdoor national record in the event with a time of 1:44.93.

Tamil Nadu's Lokesh Magendhi clinched the gold medal in the men's U-20 800m final, clocking 1:53.92, in a race that featured only three competitors.
Elangovan attempted 4.25m but it was a foul. Nevertheless,the three-time national champion from Tamil Nadu, entered her name in the record books with her outstanding effort in Bhubaneswar.
