Mumbai's Sonia Malhotra to head IGULS

Mumbai, Feb 19 (UNI) City's leading amateur ladies golfer Sonia Malhotra has been selected as the 20th Convener of the Indian Golf Union Ladies' Section, the body which, under the aegis of the Indian Golf Union, is responsible for the promotion and welfare of amateur women's golf in India.

A fine golfer herself, Sonia has played at the zonal and national levels, been a semi-finalist in one national championship, won the Convener's Prize for the most improved handicap over the period of one year, won the Maharashtra Open and many other local Mumbai golf events.

Sonia comes from a family of golfers and currently holds a 10 handicap and comes into her post at a time when India has been making huge progress in golf, and Indian men have been leading in golf events in India, Europe, and Asia.

As Convener for a two-year tenure, Sonia will captain her team to the Queen Sirikit Cup in the Philippines next month, and feels her team should fare well, as it comprises three of India's leading women golfers, all very experienced, even though two of them are only in their teens.
