Model School Jalandhar, GHP Delhi in title clash
Jalandhar, Jan 20 (UNI) Guru Harkishan Public School Delhi and Government Model School Jalandhar will clash for the title in the 3rd All India Balwant Singh Kapur Memorial Hockey Tournament (boys under-17) here tomorrow.
While Government Model School Jalandhar overpowered defending champion Lyalpur Khalsa School Jalandhar by 5-3 in a tough semi-final which was stretched to the tie breaker stage, last year's runners up Guru Harkishan Public School Delhi edged out Government High School Chandigarh by 1-0 in the other well fought semi final played at the Burlton Park Surjit Hockey Stadium here today.
Lyalpur Khalsa School and Model School fought neck and neck in the first semi-final. Aggressive play by defending champion Lyalpur Khalsa boys earned them three penalty corners in first 15 minutes but all were wasted. Model School secured the lead in 19th minute when Captain Jagrup Singh converted a penalty corner into goal. Soon after in the 28th minute rival's Ajay Kumar levelled up (1-1) through penalty corner.
Five minutes later Mandeep Singh of Khalsa School posted another goal on penalty corner to give team a 2-1 lead. This lead prevailed for long untill Mandeep Singh of Model School posted a fine field goal in 62nd minute to secure the equaliser(2-2) and forced the match into tie breaker stage.
In the tie braker, Lyalpur Khalsa School scored one goal on five penalty strokes against three goals of the rival team.
In the second match both teams exhibited fast play but failed to avail chances to score. While Chandigarh team got seven penalty corners during the course of match, Delhiites earned four but all were wasted. The lone goal for the winners was posted by Satish Lama on a fine field move in the 37th minute.
