McDowell becomes first Irishman to win US Open

New York, June 21 (ANI): Irishman Graeme McDowell became the first golfer from his country to win the U.S. Open title on Sunday.

McDoweel scripted history at the Pebble Beach Golf Links and the United States Open championships played here.

According to the New York Times, the title this year fell to someone who had never even visited the course before he arrived for the tournament last week.

McDowell needed every ounce of his will to win the tournament.

He built a lead with unnaturally steady play on the front nine and then simply survived the back nine to win the title by a single stroke after shooting a nerve rattling three-over-par 74.

This is McDowell's first major title, but he betrayed few of the nerves that must have come with that pursuit.

He held off the even-more unheralded Gregory Havret of France by one stroke after Havret failed to birdie the final hole. McDowell needed only to two-putt the final green for the victory. And after he did that, still on the green, he hugged his father in celebration. (ANI)
