Manipuri Tombi Devi bags gold in European event

New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) Tombi Devi of Manipur created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in a European Judo Union's (EJU) championship for seniors.

Tombi won the gold in women's 48 kg category in the just concluded 21st International Bosphorous EJU B tournament, which ended yesterday in Istanbul, Turkey.

Fellow Manipuri judoka L Brojeshwari Devi bagged the bronze in women's 57 kg category in the same tournament, according to a Judo Federation of India release here today.

Tombi had won bronze in the Asian Championship held in Kuwait in May.

The Indian team is presently attending a training programme conducted by the EJU till July 6 in preparation for the World Judo Championships to be held in Brazil in September this year.
