Manipur lifts overall team championship title

Bangalore, Jan 13 (UNI) Manipur lifted the overall team championship title by winning 11 golds at the 17th Senior National Fencing Championship for Men and Women at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here today.

While Punjab finished second, hosts Karnataka were placed third.

Earlier, in the Epee men's team event, Manipur sabers defeated Karnataka 15-11.

In the Epee women's individual event, Karamjeeth Kaur of Punjab had to sweat it out against strong contender Lakshmi of Karnataka.

When the score was equalled, Kaur regained her stamina and with good footwork took a two point lead to win the title at 15-13.

Defending champions Manipur lasses lifted the Epee team event title by defeating hosts Karnataka 15-12.

Manipur sabers, led by S Reosiha Devi, were quick in attacking and did not give time to the opponents to settle down. Devi was well supported by her team mates M Sandhyarani Devi, L Samashaki Devi and R K Rabika Devi.

Manipur men also continued their domination and won gold by defeating Assam 15-5 in the Saber Team event.
