Manipur govt to award Rs one crore to Olympic medalist

Imphal, Mar 15 (UNI) The Manipur government would give away Rs one crore, Rs 50 lakhs and Rs 25 lakhs to all sportspersons who get gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in Olympic Games, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said.

A function to honour the sports persons of the state who got medals in the recently held 33rd National Games in Assam and other national tournaments were held yesterday at Khuman Lampak.

About Rs 1.7 crore were distributed to the sportspersons by the Chief Minister.

He said the performance and sacrifice of the sportspersons could never be compensated.

Manipur which stood second in the National Games got 51 golds, 32 silver medals and 40 bronze medals. A sum of Rs 3 lakhs, 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 were given to gold, silver and bronze medalists respectively.

E Geeta (Fencing) was promoted as Sub-Inspector, S Tombisana (Cylcing and N Harina (Fencing) as ASIs.

The Manipur Police Housing Corporation gave Rs seven lakhs to cyclist Ch Rameshwori who bagged the gold in the tournament.

The Chief Minister announced that April 2 next will be observed as holiday to honour the feat of the sportpersons and announced that their incentives will also be increased.
