Maharashtra state Athletic championship from tomorrow

Pune Sept 8 (UNI) The stage is set for the senior Maharashtra State Athletic Championship with top athletes from all over the state vying for honours at the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Baburao Sanas sports complex here from Septmber 9 to 11.

The annual event is organized by the Pune District Amateur Athletic Association (PDAAA) for the second successive year and sponsored by Rohan Builders (India) Private Limited.

Some of the top athletes, both men and women, will be aspiring to find a place in the Indian squad for the ensuing 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, slated to be held at the sprawling Shiv Chhatrapati Sports complex at Mahalunge- Balewadi the venue of the third National Games .

The three-day state meet for men and women assumes importance as it would serve as the barometer to select the Maharashtra contingent to take part in the senior athletic championship to be held at Bhopal from September 17 to 20.

The event has attracted 1000 athletes from 30 affiliated district units to make the competition razor sharp, the organisers said.

The IOA president Suresh Kalmadi, MP, will formally inaugurate the meet.
