Maharashtra, Karnataka, UP shine in swimming

Margao, June 21 (UNI) Maharashtra dominated with three gold medals and set two new meet records, followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh with two gold medals each on the first day of the four-day Sub-junior National Aquatic Swimming championship, which got underway here from today at Fatorda swimming pool in South Goa.

Bengal, Gujarat and Asom had to be content with one gold medal each.

Out of the 10 events in the day, four new meet records were set -- two by Maharashtra and one each by Karnataka and Asom.

Maharashtra's Yudhisthir Jaisingh set a new meet record and claimed gold in the 200 mt free style boys in Group III with a timing of 2:15:58. He broke his teammate Saurabh Sangvekar's existing record of 02:17:14, which he had established last year.

Maharastra's second record was set by Gauri Dessai who bagged gold with a timing of 1:25:25 in the 100 mt breast-stroke girls in Group III, erasing her teammate Purva Shetye's existing record of 1:25:43, which the latter had established in 2005.

Karnataka's Prathima Kollali also set a new meet record and claimed gold medal with a timing of 2:20:80 in the 200 mt free style girls, in Group III, breaking the existing record of 02:23:81 set by Maharastra's Surbhi Tipre in 2005.

Asom's Sagar Kumar also created a new meet record and claimed gold with a timing of 00:40:62 in the 50 mt breast stroke boys in Group IV. He erased the existing record of 00:40:66, in the name of Manipur's Arjun E established in 2003.

The other gold medalists of the day were Bengal's Supriya Mondal with a timing of 00:33:52 in the 50 mt butter fly boys in Group IV, Maharastra's Pranjali Davda with a timing of 00:36:16 in the 50 mt butter fly girls in Group IV. And Uttar Pradesh's Dilip Yadav with a timing of 00:31:47 in the 50 mt butter fly boys in Group III.

Gujarat's Vandita Dhariyal also won a gold medal with a timing of 00:33:31 in 50 mt butter fly girls in Group III. Karnataka's Prajwala S with a timing of 00:43:61 in the 50 mt breast stroke girls in Group IV and Uttar Pradesh's Yogesh Kumar Sharma with a timing of 01:21:09.
