Kolkata Police Commissioner new CAB president

Kolkata, Jan 24 (UNI) Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee was today elected uncontested as president of Cricket Association of Bengal(CAB), ending a week-long high drama involving politics.

Mr Mukherjee was declared elected after no nomination was filed against him even on the last day today.

The interim election of CAB was scheduled to be held on February one to fill the post of president left vacant by Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya.

With the intervention of the CPI(M) top brass, including Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the Police Commissioner escaped a contest with Mr Subhash Chakraborty, the high-profile Sports and Transport Minister of the state.

Opposing the candidature of Mr Mukherjee, who had enjoyed open support of the Chief Minister in the last CAB election, the Sports Minister announced last week his decision to contest for the post.

However, following persuasion by veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu and the Chief Minister, Mr Chakraborty decided not to be in the fray.
