Koeman tactics pay off against Arsenal
EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, Feb 21 (Reuters) PSV Eindhoven coach Ronald Koeman thought out a bright, tactical plan that inspired his side to a 1-0 win against Arsenal in the first leg of the Champions League first knock out round.
Ecuadorian Edison Mendez broke the deadlock after an hour with a 20-metre shot and Arsenal lacked creativity in their hunt for an equaliser in yesterday's game.
''Of all the Champions League matches we have played this season this was our best, against tough opponents who reached last year's final,'' Koeman told reporters.
Koeman deliberately moved his two strikers to the flanks to leave open the centre and reduce any attacking forays from the Arsenal full backs.
In the first half, Arsenal kept PSV under pressure and created two good chances but goalkeeper Gomes saved both.
''Our tactical plan worked. Arsenal are great when you lose the ball but if they have to build up from defence they hardly create any chances,'' said Koeman.
''It was obvious that their central defenders, who are used to marking someone, did not know what to do without a direct opponent.'' Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said his team was the only side that wanted to play football and PSV had played for a 0-0 draw.
But Koeman said: ''You have to be aware what you can do as team. I had only 16 players to call on tonight and a lot of problems in attack.
''We just don't have the same quality players as Arsenal but we proved tonight that with a lesser squad and some creativity you can achieve a lot.'' Reuters SAM RN2057
