Knicks Clinch Spot In NBA Finals After Sweeping Cavaliers

The New York Knicks reached the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years, sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 130-93 victory in Game 4 on Monday. Third-seeded New York now rides an 11-game play-off winning streak, tied for the third-longest in league history, and continues a dominant postseason run.

New York, which last lifted the NBA trophy in 1973, now prepares for Game 1 of the Finals on June 3. The opponent will be the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs, with their Western Conference finals series tied 2-2 before Game 5 in Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

Knicks reach NBA Finals after sweep

The route to the NBA Finals has been emphatic for the New York Knicks since early trouble against the Atlanta Hawks. After falling behind 2-1 in that opening series, with each defeat decided by one point, New York responded with 11 straight wins, outscoring Atlanta, the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland by an average of 23.8 points.

During that stretch, the New York Knicks shot 53.3 per cent from the field and delivered several huge margins. They closed out Atlanta with a 51-point win in Game 6, then swept the 76ers with a clinching 30-point victory in the East semi-finals. Monday’s 37-point blowout of Cleveland completed the conference sweep.

Jalen Brunson received the Eastern Conference finals MVP award after leading the New York Knicks against Cleveland. Brunson averaged 25.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists over the four games. OG Anunoby added 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest, providing two-way play on the wing across the sweep.

Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 15.8 points, 12 rebounds and four assists per game for the New York Knicks, anchoring the interior. Josh Hart supplied all-round impact with 14.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.25 steals per game. Their combined production supported Brunson’s scoring and helped maintain consistent control of every match-up with Cleveland.

New York Knicks player Points per game Rebounds per game Assists per game Steals per game
Jalen Brunson 25.5 7.8 3.3 -
OG Anunoby 16.3 5.8 3.3 -
Karl-Anthony Towns 15.8 12.0 4.0 -
Josh Hart 14.3 7.8 5.5 2.25

Beyond the stars, Landry Shamet delivered a historic shooting display for the New York Knicks in the series. Shamet set an NBA play-off series record by hitting 11 of 12 attempts from three-point range. New York also carried strong regular-season form, finishing 53-29 in the first campaign under head coach Mike Brown.

New York Knicks context and Cleveland Cavaliers struggles

The Cleveland Cavaliers entered the Eastern Conference finals after a 52-30 regular season, reaching this stage for the first time since 2018. Cleveland advanced by edging the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in Game 7 of the semi-finals. The franchise had also held the East’s top seed last season before a five-game defeat to the Indiana Pacers.

The turning point of this year’s clash with the New York Knicks came in Game 1, when Cleveland lost control late. The Cavaliers allowed a 22-point fourth-quarter lead to slip away and eventually fell 115-104 in overtime. From the 7:42 mark of the fourth quarter, New York outscored Cleveland 44-11, setting the tone.

Cleveland’s broader record under head coach Kenny Atkinson underlines a pattern across two seasons. The Cavaliers have gone 116-48 in the regular season with Atkinson, the third-best mark in that span. Only Oklahoma City, with 132 wins, and the Boston Celtics, with 117, have more, yet Cleveland’s play-off record stands at 13-14.

That contrast highlights the challenge of carrying regular-season form into series like this against the New York Knicks. Cleveland failed to capitalise on strong seeding last season, exiting against the Pacers in the conference semi-finals. This year’s sweep at the hands of New York again left Atkinson’s group short of the NBA Finals.

The New York Knicks’ run has also generated strong reaction among supporters and across social media platforms. Celebrations followed the Game 4 win, including a widely shared post from the team account featuring a message familiar to fans and the league. The clip captured the mood around the franchise’s long-awaited return to the championship stage.

After last season’s Eastern Conference finals loss to the Indiana Pacers, the New York Knicks have moved one step further, reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since the 1990s. Their 11-game winning streak, dominant margins and balanced roster now carry into a June 3 opener against either Oklahoma City or San Antonio.
