Karnataka enters last eight

Vijayawada, Jan 17 (UNI) Defending champion Karnataka today entered the last eight by defeating Goa in the boys' section of the 33rd Reliance Junior National Volleyball championship played here.

In the Pool 'A' league-match, Karnataka outplayed Goa in straight sets 25-19,25-19,25-16 and booked a berth in the quarter-final.

The matches between Jharkhand and Manipur in Pool 'D' and Gujarat vs Andaman in Pool 'C' was not held as Manipur and Andaman teams had not turned up for the match. The organisers declared Jharkhand and Gujarat as winners.

In the other league-match in Pool 'C' of girls section, Tripura trounced Jharkhand 25-11,25-12,25-19.

Kerala, who won the match against Chhattisgarh 25-06,25-14,25-14, got a drubbing in the hands of Chandigarh, as it lost the match with the latter in an exciting tussle at 25-21,26-24,11-25,25-19 in Pool 'A' of girls segment.

Andhra Pradesh defeated Chhattisgarh in Pool 'D' (boys) match 25-16,25-10,25-09.

The match between Madhya Pradesh and Orissa in Pool 'D' of girls section was keenly fought, with the former defeating the latter 3-2.

Madhya Pradesh after winning the first set 25-14, lost the next two to Orissa 22-25,24-26. However, Madhya Pradesh recovered from the shock and played gallantly to win the next two with 25-21, 15-13.

West Bengal was declared winner in the Pool 'A' (boys) match after Chandigarh failed to turned up.
