Justin Rose Takes Lead At Masters First Round With Seven Under Par Performance

Justin Rose expressed that he drew energy from his environment while shooting seven under par to lead the Masters after the first round. Despite being a runner-up twice, in 2015 and 2017, he has yet to win the tournament after 19 attempts. "Starting the day it was very much in my own bubble, my own game," Rose stated, as reported by BBC Sport.

Playing in his 20th Masters at age 45, Rose dismissed the notion that age could be an advantage after securing a three-shot lead. He emphasised that experience is beneficial but not a substitute for execution. "Experience is great, [but] you have to execute, right? It doesn't make up for poor execution, ever," he told NBC Sports.

Justin Rose Leads Masters After First Round

Rose highlighted the importance of combining experience with execution for success. He acknowledged having had both great rounds and challenging ones at Augusta National. This understanding helps him manage risks effectively during play. "But if you can have great experience and execute on top of it, that's a great combo," he added.

During his round, Rose felt a shift when reaching six under par after holes eight through ten. He described this moment as feeling special and different from usual play. Despite facing Amen Corner, he maintained focus with solid pars on holes 11 and 12.

The putt at hole 16 was particularly significant for Rose, marking a point where he felt ahead of himself. With birdie opportunities on holes 17 and 18 due to pin placements, he aimed to achieve something remarkable that day. Reflecting on his performance, Rose considered it a great day overall.

Fred Couples also impressed by finishing one under par at age 65, placing T11 after the first round at Augusta. His performance highlights how experience can still shine through in competitive golf despite age differences among players.

Rose's familiarity with Augusta National contributed to matching his best score there. He acknowledged this achievement as significant given his extensive history with the course. "And yeah, I played a lot of golf here at Augusta National," Rose remarked about equalling his best score.

Looking ahead to subsequent rounds, Rose remains focused on maintaining momentum and executing well throughout all four days of competition. "That's hopefully where the experience can kick in because there's never 72 holes of plain sailing," he noted about navigating challenges during play.
