Justin Rose Sets Masters Pace With Seven-Under-Par Round As Rory McIlroy Faces Challenges

Justin Rose delivered an impressive performance at the Masters, showcasing his skills with a remarkable opening round. Competing at Augusta National for the 20th time, Rose matched his best score at the event with a seven-under-par 65. This achievement placed him three shots ahead of competitors like Scottie Scheffler, Ludvig Aberg, and Corey Conners. "I went out there with the mentality of being really clear, really patient, and just got off to a flyer," said Rose.

Rose's record-breaking performance marked the fifth time he has led after the first round at Augusta, surpassing Jack Nicklaus's previous record of four. Meanwhile, reigning champion Scheffler completed a bogey-free round with a score of 68. He aims to become the first player since Tiger Woods to win consecutive Masters titles. "Anytime you can keep a card clean out here, it's a really good thing," Scheffler commented on his performance.

Rose Leads Masters; McIlroy Struggles

Bryson DeChambeau made significant progress on the leaderboard late in the day. In contrast, Rory McIlroy experienced difficulties despite being well-positioned through 14 holes. McIlroy shared second place with Scheffler and Conners before double-bogeying the 15th and 17th holes. This setback left him trailing by three or more shots for the seventh consecutive Masters tournament.

Patrick Reed expressed frustration over his putting after scoring one-under 71. "Hit it fine, missed it in the wrong spots, and putted like a blind man," Reed stated. He struggled with leaving putts short and failing to read them correctly. Reed emphasized that such putting would not lead to victories in golf tournaments.

Fred Couples joined Reed at one under par, becoming the second-oldest player to shoot under par at Augusta at age 65. "Today is a hell of a round. I am exhausted," Couples remarked about his performance. He expressed confidence in playing well if conditions remain favourable without making mistakes.

Nicholas Dunlap faced challenges during his round, finishing with an 18-over-par 90 and sitting at the bottom of the standings. Despite this setback, Dunlap remains determined to improve in future rounds.

The opening day of the Masters provided thrilling moments as seasoned players demonstrated their expertise while newcomers faced challenges on this iconic course. As the tournament progresses, fans eagerly anticipate how these initial performances will influence subsequent rounds.
