Junior squash tournament begins Aug 8

Mumbai, Aug 5 (UNI) Leading players in junior boys and girls will be seen in action in the DHFL-Matunga Gymkhana junior squash open tournament which will be held at the Matunga Gymkhana court from August 8-12.

This tournament has assumed significance as it is a Maharashtra State Ranking tournament and the team for the junior nationals will be selected at Ajmer from October 16 based on the performance here and two more tournaments to be held at the Willingdon Gymkhana and Bombay Gymkhana.

Vikram Malhotra, Cyrus Vakil and Aditya Jagtap among the boys, while Sachika Balwani, Shivangi Paranjpe, Namrata Purohit and Shaheen Madraswala among the girls will vie for the top honours.

The organisers while informing that they had received as many as 259 entries for this tournament, said the matches would be held in boys under-19, under-15, under-13, under-11 and girls under-19 and under-13, including a special section for the under-9s.

The preliminary matches will be played over best-of-three games with 11 points in the American scoring system. From the quarter-finals the matches would be of best of five sets.

The boys under-19 winner will be richer by Rs 15,000, while the runner-up will get Rs 8,000, the under-15 winner will get Rs.

7,000, under-13 winner will get Rs 6,000 and under-11 winner will be richer by Rs 5000. In the girls section the under-19 winner will get Rs 7,000, while the runner-up will take home Rs 3,750. The under-13 winner will be richer by Rs 5,000. The mixed under-9 winners will receive Rs 4,000, the organisers announced at the press conference.
